5G-Technology for Greater Safety and Sustainability in Transport

The innovative ‘5GoIng’ research project on using 5G technology in mobility has been completed. Since December 2021, science, business, and administration have been working together to develop an open platform for networked mobility solutions in Ingolstadt.

The research project focussed on using state-of-the-art sensor technology - including traffic cameras and LiDAR technology - that communicate with each other in real-time via 5G networks. This technology makes it possible to analyze and specifically control the flow of traffic to increase road safety. The data obtained offers new possibilities for smart traffic control and could also be used in smart city applications in the future.

The project partners included Ingolstadt University of Applied Sciences, IFG Ingolstadt AöR, the Fraunhofer Institute for Transportation and Infrastructure Systems IVI, LiangDao GmbH, and ZERO GmbH. They were supported by AUDI AG and CARIAD SE as associated partners. Together, they further developed the ‘First Mile’ digital test field along the road by the Auwaldsee. The test field now also includes the roundabout at the IN-Campus.

At the final event, the results of ‘5GoIng’ were presented and brought to life through practical demonstrations. These included vehicles and traffic infrastructure that communicate with each other in real-time using Car2X technology to warn road users of dangers at an early stage. The new dashboard, which analyses traffic live, and 5G-controlled LED lighting at pedestrian crossings, which ensures greater safety, were also part of the demonstration.

The ‘First Mile’ digital test field will remain in place after the end of the project and will continue to be used as a platform for testing and further developing new mobility technologies. Start-ups and companies from the region have the opportunity to test innovative solutions there. The findings gathered as part of ‘5GoIng’ will be incorporated into future research projects and should help to make mobility in Ingolstadt and beyond safer and more environmentally friendly.

The research project, funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV), aims to improve road safety and sustainability in cities in the long term.
