Procedure of the process
After we have received your application and after the application deadline, all candidates are carefully examined by the responsible management. We make every effort to act fairly and equitably. All suitable candidates will be invited to an interview, where a work sample is often required so that both you and we can see wether we would be a good match. There may be a follow-up interview after the initial interview before the management decide on us. We look forward to meeting you!

Your path to professorship:
Following the advertisement, the faculty establishes an appointment commitee. This committee reviews the applications received and organizes the trial lecture, to which all suitable candidates are invited to give a trial lecture, to which all suitable candidates are invited to give a trial lecture and present themselves in person to the appointment committee. The trial lecture usually consists of a public lecture with a specified compulsory topic and an optional topic followed by a discussion. Often one of the two presentations must also be given in English.
After the trial teaching event, the committee draws up the shortlist of the most suitable candidates. The President of the university makes the final decision based on the shortlist.
The following requirements must be met for appointment as a professor (Art. 57 Abs. 3 BayHIG)
The professional orientation or a aptitude in terms of the field of occupation must be fulfilled.
A university degree and, in general, a doctorate are required. An appointment without a doctorate is only possible in defined exceptional cases, particularly in the field of design.
Proof of pedagogical aptitude must be available or provided in the course of the applicant selection process.
Proof must be provided of five years of professional practice, which must have been acquired after the university degree course and of which at least three years must have been spent outside the university sector. In exeptional cases, atleast five years of work within the higher education sector is also permitted, which was mainly in cooperation with non-university practice.
It should be noted that it is no longer possible to become a civil servant after the age of 52. It is also not possible for people from non-EU countries to become civil servants. In these cases, recruitment is only possible as an employee.
The following requirements must be met for a position as a junior professor (Art. 64 Abs. 2 BayHIG)
The professional orientation or aptitude in terms of the field of appointment must be fulfilled.
The applicant must have a university degree or a compareable qualification.
The “practice track” also requires a further academic qualification, usually a completed doctorate.
In the “doctoral track”, it is possible to apply without a doctorate. This requires at least three years of relevant professional experience in the field of appointment, which must have been acquired after the university degree and must have been gained outside the university sector. In exceptional cases, an activity within the university sector is also permitted, which mainly took place in cooperation with non-university practice.
Offering you a good start with us is very important to us. You should feel completely welcome and be provided with all the information you need. For this purpose, your mentor will welcome you on your first day and guide you through your first steps at THI over the following days and weeks. You will be familiarized with the most important systems, all procedures will be explained to you and you will be introduced to all the people and departments with whom you will be working closely. Our Welcome Day together with the university management will round off your induction.

Securing young talent in teaching
With the Professional Tenure Track Programm (PTTTHI), the federal government has been promoting the new career path of the junior professorship since 2022, whereby young scientists make the direct transition to a lifetime professorship after a successful probationary phase.
