Dr. Martin Schuster lectures on China

At the beginning of January 2021, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) published a draft law that is intended to enable the increasing testing of intelligent connected vehicles (ICV) on the road. The Chinese automotive industry is increasingly focussing on highly automated driving to move into the fast lane. From driverless taxis and buses to automated lorries and private transport, automated vehicles will change the road landscape in China shortly. So is a revolution in the automotive industry imminent? One thing is clear: in the interplay between opportunities, risks, and uncertainties, China is at the center of a development that offers OEMs, component manufacturers, and the supplier industry the prospect of billions in profits.

In the lecture "From cultural nuances to Technological Triumphs: China's Path to Autonomous Excellence", Dr. Martin Schuster discusses aspects of this development, in particular the influence of Chinese culture, megatrends, and the importance of China's Generation Z. Automated driving in China in the area of conflict between customer requirements, legal requirements, social acceptance, safety and the performance of the available technology. The resulting challenges for research and development in the automotive sector are addressed and discussed in the context of their influence on business models and other related industries.

The speaker, Dr. Martin Schuster, was born in Munich in 1971. He holds various degrees and doctorates from the Technical University of Munich, the University of Hagen, and the University of Györ. In 2000, Dr. Schuster began his career in the Volkswagen Group at Audi in the field of numerical fluid mechanics. He then held various management positions in the areas of research and development, project management, and digitalization/big data. His wealth of experience ranges from high-performance computing to vehicle project management and the management of development departments. In 2016, he was appointed honorary professor at the University of Györ and adjunct professor at the University of Applied Sciences in Ingolstadt. Since September 2020, Dr. Schuster has been responsible as Senior Director of Research & Engineering Driver Assistance Systems at SAIC Volkswagen in Shanghai.
