THI has a broad spectrum of applied research expertise in the field of mobility. It is nationally and internationally recognised in the field of vehicle safety, including the use of machine learning methods. In the AI research network of the High-Tech Agenda Bavaria, THI is named as the network node for the topic of mobility. The DFG-funded CARISSMA Center of Automotive Research, the nationwide lead centre for vehicle safety, is part of THI.
Research Institutes and Fields of Competency
The majority of scientists in the field of mobility work at CARISSMA - the nationwide lead centre for road safety - in the three institutes C-IAD, C-ISAFE and C-ECOS. The research focus here is, among other things, on integral vehicle safety and accident prevention as well as simulation-based test and development methods for safe (electric) driving. At the AImotion Bavaria Institute - the AI mobility hub in Bavaria - the focus is on the topic of "automated driving". The scientists at the Institute for Innovative Mobility (IIMo) focus their research on resource-saving drive systems in connection with the development of adaptive battery systems. The THI's expertise in the field of aviation is currently bundled in the Aviation field of competence. The Automotive & Mobility field of competence deals with innovative mobility concepts as well as business management issues that are closely related to the automotive industry.
The Fraunhofer Application Centre "Networked Mobility and Infrastructure", as an AN-institute of the THI, focuses on research questions relating to traffic control and its optimisation approaches.
