THI research partnership SAFIR awarded second funding phase in the federal programme FH-Impuls

The research partnership SAFIR (Safety for all - Innovative Research Partnership on Global Vehicle and Road Safety Systems) of Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt (THI) will be funded for another four years by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research under the funding measure "Strong Universities of Applied Sciences - Impulse for the Region" (FH-Impuls). This is the result of a current interim evaluation after almost three and a half years. For the intensification phase from 2021 to 2024, the Ministry is providing the THI with funding of 4.7 million euros. In addition, the professors involved in SAFIR were able to raise around EUR 1 million in third-party funding from industrial companies.
With SAFIR, the THI - embedded in the CARISSMA research and test centre - supports Vision Zero, the EU's long-term goal of zero road deaths. Under the new guiding theme "Safe mobility of the future", various research and development projects will be implemented in the mega-clusters "Safe Automated Mobility" (Head: Prof. Dr. Andreas Riener) and "Safe Electric Mobility" (Head: Prof. Dr. Hans-Georg Schweiger) from January 2021 in the four-year intensification phase.
In order to implement the projects, THI has established a strategic partnership with medium-sized regional companies and OEMs in the automotive sector in a start-up phase since 2017 - in accordance with the objectives of the FH-Impuls funding line. The network now comprises 22 partners from industry and public institutions. The strategic cooperation with the actors in the region is to be further intensified in the future, as well as the cooperation with THI's own or THI-based institutes and centres that conduct research in the field of mobility.
