Automotive & Mobility Management (M. A.)

Evidence of the following qualifications has to be provided for admission to the master’s degree course in Automotive & Mobility Management (AMM):

• An economics or engineering degree from a German university with at least 210 ECTS credit points and or an equivalent qualification from a university in Germany or abroad. A certificate must be submitted as proof. The Examination Commission decides on equivalence.
• Applicants must pass a selection procedure (only available in German) for the master's degree course in Automotive & Mobility Management.
• Please note: Your admission cannot be reviewed until all application documents have been submitted. It is not possible to make a definitive statement without looking at the certificates first. We cannot provide advance information regarding your chances of admission by e-mail or telephone.

The master’s degree course AMM is subject to limited admissions for capacity reasons. 12-15 students are currently admitted per semester.

NOTE on 180 ECTS: 

Can I apply even if I have obtained less than 210 ECT (normally 180 ECTS) in my previous bachelor’s degree?

It is possible to apply for the AMM master’s degree with less than 210 ECTS; however, proof of compensation of the missing 30 ECTS has to be provided no later than the end of the application period by means of:

• proof of practical experience outside the degree course which corresponds to the practical semester of a bachelor’s degree in economics or engineering in terms of content and scope, or

• proof of practical or theoretical study and examinations passed at a German or foreign university in addition to the student’s first degree which corresponds in content and scope to the demands of a bachelor's degree in economics or engineering.

NOTE: Please note that where documents are submitted to show evidence of practical professional experience or either practical or theoretical achievements worth 30 ECTS – in addition to a bachelor’s degree – the documents must clearly indicate that the 30 ECTS were obtain over and above the bachelor's degree programme. Confirmation can be provided by the university showing that the ECTS/internship were not counted towards the first degree. The duration of the practical professional experience gained outside the first degree should be equivalent to 20 weeks of full-time work. Furthermore, the internship reference must be submitted in officially certified form together with the other application documents. In both cases, we recommend to submit meaningful documents from which the Examination Committee can clearly understand the substantive aspects immediately.

The dual studies programme enables a combination of practical training elements in a company with the theoretical education provided by the university. There is a choice of either the joint model (academic study + vocational training) or the degree course with vocational experience (academic study + intense practical phases). There is an obvious advantage to students here: practically oriented academic study generally enables a particularly smooth transition from university to the world of work. What is more, the student usually receives financial remuneration from the company concerned.

In the joint model, students may start working at the company several months before the start of the first semester, depending on the company concerned. At the start of the course there is an alternation between theory (during the semester) and practical experience (between semesters and during the practical semesters). In order to embark on a dual studies programme, students have to apply to both a company and to THI (be sure to take note of company application deadlines!).

The qualification profile gained in completing the course enables students to take on highly qualified specialised positions and management tasks, in particular with an automobile manufacturer, automotive supplier or mobility service provider as well as organisations in the transport sector in general. 

The skills acquired include the ability to draw up a strategic concept for the future design of mobility services through to concrete implementation of such concepts in the relevant context.

Subject-related practical experience and internships are an advantage but not a pre-requisite.

The Automotive & Mobility Management course combines approaches to mobility issues from both the economic and the engineering perspective. As a result, students with more of an economics background should certainly have an interest in technological solutions as well as in the control methods used by IT and communication technology. In the case of students from an engineering background, they should be interested in economic issues relating to technological solutions. However, it is not necessary to have a detailed, fundamental of the ‘other’ field prior to starting the course.

Mobility issues can relate to local and regional traffic problems and they can also have an international impact. The focus is certainly on central issues such as the problems in international megacities (e.g. Mexico City, Beijing, Rio de Janeiro) and the international interlinking of passenger and goods transport. Even though mobility issues always have to be adapted to the given local situation, the underlying issues of traffic flow, environmental pollution and mobility services are always raised within an international context in terms of the application of Solutions.

It is also possible to take a double degree, which means you will acquire two full qualifications at the same time, one at the THI Business School and one at a foreign partner university. To do this, you are required to study at the partner university for at least one year. More information about double degrees is available from the International Office.

The interdisciplinary approach of the course is reflected in the teaching line-up. Modules are taught by lecturers from all three faculties. In addition to this, lecturers from the automotive industry and the field of electromobility provide a practical perspective for students.

Recommended English language level
In this degree course, some modules are taught in English. Furthermore, it is possible to write seminar papers and final theses in English. This can be an opportunity if the seminar papers and final theses are written in cooperation with international companies. For a successful participation in the modules, as well as a successful completion of seminar papers and final theses, a level of C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is recommended.

Possibilities to achieve the recommended language level
Students who do not have the recommended language level at the beginning of the study can earn this level during their studies through the offers of the THI Language Centre. This offer includes e.g. Business English, Refresher courses in grammar and spelling, and TOEFL preparation courses. In addition, the THI Language Centre provides individual advice to students on how to improve the English language level.

In the event of admission to the master's degree course, certain documents then have to be submitted as an original or as a certified copy.

The bachelor’s degree certificate can be submitted later provided evidence is submitted before the regular application deadline that the applicant will complete their first degree course at the end of the current semester with 210 ECTS points. This is done by uploading a recent transcript of records and proof of the final ECTS credits earned upon graduation (for example, excerpt study and examination regulation). Whatever happens, the final certificate or confirmation of successful completion of the first degree must be submitted no later than at matriculation.

It is not possible to provide information about the NC (numerus clausus – admission restriction) for the master’s degree course at the time of application because it will not yet have been determined at this point.

Waiting semesters are not taken into account for application to a master's degree course.

The courses of the programme are held on three fixed days of the week, so it is essentially possible to do a part-time job while studying. However, please be sure to consider the significant workload that this involves. All master’s courses require preparation and follow-up. There are also several project assignments to be completed during the semester. If regular employment is pursued there is very little scope for other private activities.
