Starting this winter semester, the THI Language Center is entering new linguistic territory: for the first time, a sign language course will be offered. Prof. Dr. Thomas Becker, head of the Language Center, is pleased to have won over Anita Janßen, an experienced, state-approved sign language lecturer from the region, for the THI.
The impetus for this offer came from the student council, which asked for a sign language course for students. There are many motivations for learning sign language. A small, non-representative survey of interested students revealed that reasons include broadening one's horizons, making a personal contribution to inclusion, wanting to be able to communicate with more people, enhancing one's resume, or general interest in sign language.
The offer starts with a beginner's course and can be supplemented with advanced courses in the next semesters, depending on sufficient demand and availability.
